Virtual FLS FAQs
Should I Apply?
If you are a parent or caregiver of someone with a disability, who prefers a virtual training setting, and wishes to support their loved one in achieving their vision of a fulfilling life, we encourage you to apply. This is a statewide Series, but the number of available spaces differs across DDS regions. Click here to determine your DDS region or reach out to one of the directors listed here.
How will the series help me?
It will guide you on how to advocate effectively at both state and local levels, assist you in developing a vision and an advocacy action plan, and help you connect with other families and professionals.
What happens during the last conference?
We will travel via bus to the Massachusetts State House to join together for a tour, speakers, and to visit our state legislators. On Saturday, we wrap up the Series with self-care, celebrate our achievement with certificates, and affirm what advocacy steps we plan to take in the future.
What if I need accommodations?
Previously, we have provided services such as interpretation, translation, accessible accommodations, technology support, dietary options, respite, and more. Please communicate your requests during the application process.
What is the commitment?
If selected for the 2025 Virtual Family Leadership Series, you will participate in nine virtual sessions, each lasting two hours, scheduled for Thursday nights during January, February, and March. Throughout the Series, there will be assignments to complete, and you will be able to receive support via optional virtual office hours on Tuesdays.
For those participants interested in additional learning, they will have the opportunity to attend three optional half-day virtual sessions on Saturdays as part of the hybrid Northeast Family Leadership Series. Lastly, by attending the nine Thursday night sessions, you will qualify to join your region for a two-day in-person conference. This conference includes a field trip to the State House, self-care activities, and sharing advocacy plans with other Series participants. Meals and an overnight accommodation will be provided.
What is the application process?
Please complete the application by November 11th. If you need help with the form, don’t hesitate to contact your regional program director. Once the form is submitted, each applicant will participate in a short phone interview. All applicants will be informed about their selection status in their region, and some may be placed on a waitlist.
